The recent publicity on the biography of one of Singapore’s prominent nation builders, Dr Goh Keng Swee, has stirred up nostalgic sentiments of our past. The 1950’s and 60’s were difficult and challenging times of nation building in Singapore. We were fortunate to have an excellent team of stout-hearted and visionary leaders lead the way. What we have and are enjoying now is in no small part due to their hard work.

Our early leaders did what they did because they felt they could contribute towards making the difference for their nation. Most of them were highly educated and qualified professionals, who could have made good money but decided to take the less-traveled road of a political career, where their reputations and even lives could have been at stake. Financial rewards then, were probably not of significant consideration. It was the “calling”, the opportunity, and the convictions that propelled them forward in the milieu of the tumultuous colonial and post-colonial socio-political landscape.

For the technopreneurs of today, rewards are one of the main the reasons for long hours. For them financial success is the focus of their toil. Yet their efforts hold a certain risk factor which may lead them to financial losses or zero gains if their work turns out less than desired and their stock options become practically worthless.

Like our country leaders and global technopreneurs, our calling as Children of God is of no lesser weight. Jesus Christ came into the world to usher in HIS KINGDOM. Our call is to help “build the kingdom of God”(ie the church). As believers it is our privilege and responsibility to be involved in this glorious Kingdom building work. It is tough work, but the rewards are “out of this world”.

Unlike Singapore’s early political leaders and technopreneurs, Christians are advantaged by the fact that we already know the end result of our efforts in God’s Kingdom. Such foreknowledge of the end can never be within the grasp of any but the people of God.

For us to get involved in God’s Kingdom building, we have to be active and be involved in ministries and activities in church that we feel we can contribute to. As we go along we have a clearer understanding of our gifting and where best, we can fit into His building work. Another most important activity in God’s construction work is to bring God’s reign and rule into our homes, schools and offices and where He has placed us; to be a testimony of the living relationship with our mighty God.

So, as we celebrate our church’s 35th Anniversary on September 1st, 2007, let me renew that call to everyone in WRPF to seek and be involved in HIS KINGDOM! Come and behold our God of Wonders!Let us go out into the world to build and seek HIS KINGDOM. For ‘…thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever, Amen.’ (Matt6:13)
