At the request of the President of the BoE we are updating the church and its leadership of our development since Simon stepped out into freelance retreat work wef 1 Jan 2009. The year started with anxiety to locate our next flat before it was made clear that we were to transit to a “stepping stone” in Sengkang with Rinda’s sister and brother-in-law. Since mid-Feb we have been in this part of the world as the new town here is huge, and still growing, as compared to Bukit Batok and Bukit Panjang where we lived in the past 24 years.
16-18 March - The New Year started out slow as the 1st retreat took place only in mid-Mar with St John’s St Margaret’s with a 3-day retreat for beginners. There were 17 attendees from various churches as it was opened to non-SJSMers.
30 March – This was a Quiet Day with Alpha Singapore office staff at The Nest as part of their ongoing soul-caring for the staff.
April - In April the 1st 5-day Silent retreat took place at The Nest, 8-12 Apr with a group of 5 retreatants as we traced the footprints of Jesus in the last 6 days of His Passion Week beginning with Mary’s posture of anointing His feet with pure nard. This was followed by a Quiet Day on 18 Apr at the FMM House @ Holland Road for a cell group of 32 ladies. April ended with a Soaking Night for WRPF’s Worship Team on 30 Apr at the Church’s premises.
9-11 May – This weekend retreat at Montfort Centre went to a cell group from SJSM. Members were predominantly retirees and semi-retirees who had a very profound encounter with the Lord through the life of Peter.
20-23 May – We were at Pulai Springs, JB, with the Alpha Singapore office for their annual staff retreat. This is our 2nd year in running a retreat for the workers of which we are grateful to be a blessing to them in return as they continue to bless Singapore with the Alpha Course.
June - This is a quiet month with only a 3-day retreat for Fountain Gate Ministry, 19-21 June at Montfort Centre. FGM specialises in Counselling and Inner Healing. This retreat was for their volunteers.
July - The month started with a mini 2-day retreat for WRPF’s worship team of 15 at LifeSprings. Theme was “TIP-WIP” and though the retreat was short, the Lord was mighty in our midst! Life stories were shared and team unity brought to another level.
Month ended with a 24-hour program catered for group of 6 bank staff from RBS. This has been a follow-up from a lunch time talk in early-June. This was a highlight for me as it was good to be able to step into the banking scene again after 21 years to feel the pulse of the marketplaces. It was in that lunch meeting that I could see what the Lord has done in me that’s priceless. I saw also the needs of the Church in the marketplaces.
Work in Progress – This very much sums up what the year has been for Simon. While it is a well-deserved “sabbatical” rest after 29 years of ministry, it is also a “transitional” phase where he is learning to take it slowly and in tandem with the Lord. What’s immediate is to settle our housing matters and have the physical office set up.
What’s in the pipeline is the design of the ministry website and the unveiling of the ministry name in due time. The manuscript for the book launch is completed but in a kind of “cold storage” while we wait for the right editor to come alongside and help us in this.
Thank you for upholding us in prayers. Please continue to do so even as we learn to transit. What’s ahead we don’t fully understand. But Who’s ahead, that we do know fully. And to follow Him, regardless, is our intent.
Simon and Rinda

Alpha Course 2009 is well underway and the Lord has been so faithful in blessing us with wonderful guests!
Each week features a theme that was inline with the topic of the week. The first week’s theme was Mystery , complementing the topic of the week which was ‘Who Is Jesus?’

The masked ladies, Mahal and Jeannie, shows you how EXACTLY to wear a mask

Sporting guests sporting sporty masks...

Frankie Shin is in the hot seat playing 'Who Am I?' where he's supposed to guess who's the character projected on the screen behind him

The topic of week 2 was 'Why did Jesus die?' and the theme of that week was 'People of the world', hence we have MeL Chen gamely dressed up in a pretty cheongsam trying to avoid getting caught in the Filipino bamboo dance
Some other themes includes Directions, Illusions, and my personal favourite: Food

Inline with 'Why and How Should We Pray?' the theme of the week was 'Food'. Why? Because Christians always pray before meals! That's why!

And if the theme is 'Food', what better games to play than food games! Filipinos loves egg tarts too! And Mike certainly looks like he's enjoying himself!
After fun and games, guests settle down to watch a 45-minute video where, each week, Nicky Gumbel takes the audience through various topics such as ‘How can we have Faith?’ and ‘Why and how should I read the Bible?’
After the video, guests break up into groups to discuss on the topic of the week.

Open sharings in a group is a great way to raise questions on various topics such as 'What is God's grace' or 'How does God speak to us?'

Pastor Mary (2nd from left) is pictured here facilitating a small group and having a light-hearted moment with guests
After group discussions comes my favourite part of the afternoon: FOOD!
Dinner is a great way to bond and we all know that Singaporeans’ favourite pastime is eating what.

A sumptious spread awaits, because deep and itimate group sharing is a lot of hard work! It's time to dig in!

The best way to end any programme is with food! Yum!
On behalf of the organising committee, we would like to wish all guests and bringers a big thank you for being such a joy in the Alpha Course.
For those of you who would to check out or bring friends to the Alpha Course, we’ll be having the Alpha Day Away
at the YWCA Fort Canning Lodge, 6 Fort Canning Lodge, Singapore 179494, this Saturday, 22nd August, from 2pm-9pm.
Topics includes
- Who is the Holy Spirit?
- What does the Holy Spirit do?
- How can I be Filled with the Holy Spirit?
- How can I Make the Most of the Rest of my Life?
If you would like to sign yourself and/or a friend up, just SMS your name and contact details to Donnie at 9145 1983.
See you there!
- Donnie, Alpha 2009 Organising Committee

Dear Church Family,
My family and I want to thank you for praying for my recovery. I have no major event to report except that I am getting stronger and recovery seems to be in good progress.
My 24- session Cardiac Therapy ended a month ago. Those sessions helped me regained some physical strength. And that was good and I really enjoyed those sessions. Now Joyce and I try to take regular walks in the parks to keep up the exercise.
Through this ordeal, I have lost more than 20 lbs (10Kg). The scale seems to show that I am still losing weight though at a much slower pace. I think this has been a combination of the initial lost of appetite immediately following the surgery and the change of diet. I am still eating a lot but have cut out carbs including rice and bread (except Ezekiel Bread which is a flourless and sprouted bread).
As far as my energy level goes, my guess would be I am about 60% of my pre-surgery level. I still find myself tiring easily and needing to take rest through the day. I guess that’s normal in recovery.
Work wise, I have started to work on some initial preparation for the missions conference that I help organize each year. As for trips, I am hoping that I will recover well enough to start traveling at the end of the year. Perhaps the wise thing for me to do is to start it slow and build up strength again.
I will sure appreciate your continuing prayers for my recovery.
Thank you for your friendship and support,
Sim

End of the theory: Start of the practical!
World Revival Prayer Fellowship had its 2nd run of the Alpha Marriage course from 21st February to 18th April 2009. With the experience of four organizers from the 1st run – Pastor Thomas, leading this year’s organizing team, Jasmine, Sunny & Annie – and the able assistance of Shaun & Kay, organization of this event went more smoothly than the first run. There were 7 sessions in total, and the course was held every Saturday from 4 to 7 pm (including dinner). Each couple paid only $120 with WRPF subsidizing about 50%.
Besides fostering the strengthening of marriages between our church’s wedded couples, the objective of this course was also to reach out to pre-believers in the hope that they will come to experience God in their marriages. This run saw an attendance of 15 couples, 7 of whom were church members. Of the balance 8 couples, 3 couples were pre-believers while another 2 couples were backslid Christians. Average attendance for the course was 78%.
On the last session, the team organized the inaugural “Celebration Party” for past and present participants of Alpha Marriage. This program was well executed and received positive feedback from the participants.
Overall the course was well-received and had few hiccups: The team will look into suggestions provided by the participants via feedback forms as to further improvements to future runs. Kudos to the team who organized this course!
